Women's Quarterfinals at Madrid Masters 2016

Halep advances to the semifinals of Madrid Open 2016




The women's tournament full of surprises and unexpected drop-offs and retirements reached its quarterfinals phase with only one seeded player - the Roumanian Simona Halep [6]. The first and the second seed of the females tournament, Radwanska and Kerber, even lost in their first matches





1st Quarterfinal: Simona Halep [6] vs. Irina-Camelia Begu 6:3 0:6 6:1
In this wholly Romania match, the 6th seed in the tournament managed to win the match in 3 sets. The first was the one with most games played where Halep managed to get an advantage in the end of the set. The second set, however, Begu served a bagel to her countrywoman. This weakness and momentary drop in the form of Simona's game is one of the reasons she did not win a title in the last months. However, she managed to concentrate and take  the final set, giving the opponent just a game.


2nd Quarterfinal: Samantha Stosur vs. Patricia Maria Tig [Q] 6:3 6:4 
The experienced Australia had to meet one of the many Romanians in the quarterfinals of Mutua Madrid Open 2016. Stosur did not have many troubles defeating Tig who eliminated two of the young American talented tennis player S. Stephens and M. Keys. However, the qualificator from Romania did not manage to remain mentally stable in the important moments which did not allow her to be very competitive to Stosur.

3rd Quarterfinal: Louisa Chirico [Q] vs. Daria Gavrilova 7:6(1) 6:2
The young American qualificator Chirico eliminated the Ana Ivanovic in the first round of the tournament. In addition, she got very lucky not to play against Azarenka who left the tournament. Louisa played very bravely in the tiebreak of the first set giving only one point to her opponent. After the first set, Gavrilova did not have much power left and succeeded to take only two games in the second final set.



4th Quarterfinal: Dominika Cibulkova vs. Sorana Cristea [WC] 4:6 6:3 6:3
The fourth Romanian in the female's tournament Cristea who received a wild card in order to participate in the Masters 1000 managed to win 3 matches in two sets before facing Cibulkova. Dominica eliminated the first-seeded Radwanska in the first round of the tournament. Cristea managed to steal the first set from the Slovakian. However, Cibulkova remained solid and took the next two sets without giving many chances to her opponent.
