Mutua Madrid Open 2016 Highlights Round of 64

With the end of Day 2 at Mutua Madrid Open, the first round is over. There were many surprising and continuous matches that left many of the seeded players to prepare for the next tournament. Some matches of Day 2 will cover matches of the round of 32. However, the most interesting ones are tomorrow. If you are wondering which matches to watch at Day 3, click HERE to see some proposals.

Men's Tournament:

Easy win for Ferrer

David Ferer managed to win his match against Garcia-Lopez in three sets. Monfils, Raonic, and Gasquet had no trouble winning their matches in straight sets.

However, there were some surprises and several tennis players who had the potential to do something significant in the tournament dropped out in the round of 64:

Dimitrov is out of top 30 after Madrid Masters 2016
The first surprising drop out was that of the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov who lost against Carreno B. P. in straight sets. The Bulgarian lost a very dramatic final in Istanbul 2015 last Sunday. He was leading with a set and 5-2 in the second and lost the final with a bagel in the third set. His mental instability and uncontrollable behaviour raised many questions about his form and future matches. It seems that this lost has a great impact on the Bulgarian and it will be good for him to take a rest before Rome 1000 and French Open.

Del Potro eliminates Thiem.

Another surprise is the loss of the Dominic Thiem. The young Austrian also played a final on Sunday at BMW open in Germany. He lost in the tiebreak of the 3rd set against Kohlschreiber. It seems that Dominic needs a mental rest, too. However, Thiem lost against Juan Martin Del Potro, beloved by all tennis fans.

Karlovic out of Madrid after 3 tiebreak sets battle vs. Kudla
The longest and most competitive matches were between Ivo Karlovic and Denis Kudla and Pablo Cuevas vs. Philip Kohlschreiber. Dr. Ivo and Kudla played 3 tiebreak sets. Karlovic took the first one and lost the following two which led to his fall out of the tournament. Cuevas managed to take the tiebreak of the 3rd set against Kohlschreiber after they exchanged the first two sets with just one break in their serving games. Kohlschreiber won BMW Open last week so he was not physically strong enough to play such a long 3-set match in the first round of the tournament.

Women's Tournament:

Most surprising were the losses of Ana Ivanovic and G. Muguruza in the first round of the tournament. They lost in three sets Chirico and Begu who advance to the second round with a lot of confidence and impetus. Another unexpected result appeared in the match between Stephen and Tig. The Romanian managed to eliminate the young American talent in straight sets without any problems

Ivanovic drops out of Mutua Madrid Open 2016 after 3-set loss

Routine wins for Azarenka, Keys, Halep and Kvitova who won their matches in straight sets. They will challenge their physical and mental stability in the weeks just before Roland Garros.
