The F1 Qualifying Rules Have Been Returned to the 2015 Format

The F1 authorities have agreed to return the qualifying rules to the 2015 format starting from next week's Chinese Grand Prix. This happens due to the teams' urge for this return since they were not impressed with the new rules.
The elimination-style format that was introduced this season in the first two races disappointed not only the teams and the drivers, but also the fans since the three qualifying segments often ended without any cars on the track.

The 2015 format worked in the following way:

  • Q1
All 22 cars start a 18-minute session. The slowest 6 are knocked out and make up grid positions from 17 to 22.

  • Q2
The remaining 16 cars drive in a 15 minutes session to decide 11-16 position. Again the slowest 6 are knocked out.

  • Q3
The last 10 cars drive in a 12 minutes session to make up the final order by deciding 1-10 position.
