| Maria takes "full responsibility" for taking meldonium drug for 10 years. |
Many questions have aroused since Maria Sharapova stopped participating in tournaments. There were rumours about arm injury, about pregnancy, about retirement, about "Sugarpova" and so on but there were not any suggestions that Maria has practised doping
Yesterday, on March 7th, Maria Sharapova gave a press conference so as to answer to all the questions about her tennis career. In the press conference, she admitted that she failed a drug test just before Australian Open 2016. She shared that she has used a medicine prescribed by her family doctor called "meldonium". However, since the beginning of 2016, this substance is prohibited. It is used to protect from heart failure or muscle damage in case of overload. It slows down the breakdown of fats.
After the press conference, there were many responses from big tennis stars and famous people. The biggest rival of Sharapova, Serena Williams, did not attack the Russian but defended her by supporting Maria's theory that she did not know meldonium was prohibited. Many of the major sponsors with Maria broke their contracts with the tennis player - Porsche, Nike, Avon, Head, Tag Heuer.
.
What is going to happen with Maria Sharapova? Is she really facing a 4-year-ban? Can they really take one of the best players in the tennis history for 4 years, which will probably mean end of her career since she is 28 now?
