In their road to the final, Liverpool eliminated Carlisle with penalties, Bournemouth, Southampton, and Stoke City via penalties in the semi-finals. The Citizens reached the final far more easily, even though against stronger opponents. They eliminated Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Hull City, and Everton over two legs.
The two managers are at opposite ends in their career with their current clubs. Jurgen Klopp is looking to mark his first season as Liverpool's manager with a trophy. On the other hand, Manuel Pellegrini knows that this is his last campaign in charge of City and this is one of his last chances of winning a title with the Citizens.
Both teams won their European fixtures this week. Liverpool knocked Augsburg out with their 1:0 win on Anfield, while City made an important step towards the 1/4-finals in CL by winning against Dynamo Kyiv 1:3 in Ukraine.
